The ethics and etiquette of everyday AI.

Everyday AI Ethics

Is it rude to reply with ChatGPT?

A quick test for when an AI-written reply is fine, and when the other person deserves your own words.

Using AI to draft a reply is not rude in itself. What people object to is feeling processed rather than heard.

A three-question test

  • Did they write to you personally, about something that matters to them? Then answer in your own words, even if AI helps you tidy them.
  • Would you be embarrassed if they knew AI wrote it? Treat that as a sign to rewrite.
  • Is it routine, like confirming a time or sharing a link? AI help is fine.

Where AI helps

AI is useful when you are stuck on tone, writing in a second language, or replying to a difficult message calmly. Draft with it, then make the reply sound like you.
